Thalassotherapy (Seaweed)
Thalassotherapy, a common spa treatment, is the use of seaweed for therapeutic purposes. A
Seaweed Body Wrap is a body treatment that gently exfoliates, draws out toxins, and adds vitals nutrients and minerals to the skin. It has also been known to have a mild diuretic effect on the body, by stimulating the movement of excess interstitial fluid to the circulatory system. Some clients experience a one to three pound water weight loss.
The benefits of seaweed to the skin include re-balancing, nourishing, hydrating, cell regenerating, detoxifying, purifying, oxygenating, and re-mineralizing. These benefits are achieved due to the concentration of the following elements: Mineral salts, amino acids, vitamins A,C,B1,B12,E,PP,K, D and trace elements. Promotes tissue regeneration-Activates cell metabolism-Firming action
6 oz dried seaweed powder, 2 tsp almond oil, 2 drops lavender essential oil, plastic sheet or foil, large bowl and spoon
1. Exfoliate first and let it set in while you mix the rest
2. Mix seaweed with warm water to make it more fluid
3. Mix the rest of the ingredients to make a thick paste
4. Spread mixture over body and start with their feet
5. Cover with foil or plastic wrap to retain the heat (but if it is too hot, it will not dry)
6. Leave on for 20-30 minutes
7. Massage the face and scalp while client is wrapped (do not leave the room)
8. Rinse or wipe off with a damp rag (shower if possible)
9. Hydrating lotion can be applied
10. Drink a lot of water to re-hydrate
The basic idea is as follows:
• The abundance of minerals and trace elements in the ocean can be absorbed through the skin.
• Blood plasma and seawater have a similar chemical composition, making osmosis easy, particularly when the latter is heated to body temperature.
• The toxins move out while the minerals come in.
• Seaweed is known for its remunerative properties and has long been used for weight loss and skin maladies.
• The Seaweed body wrap is designed for a deep full body detoxification.
General indications for Thalassotherapy are as follows:
• Phlebological complaints (Varicose veins, poor circulation, heavy legs)
• Rheumatism
• Osteoarthritis
• Stress
• Depression
• Fatigue
• Certain neurological adjustments
• Asthenia
• Psoriasis
• Cellulite
• Ante-natal and post-partum therapy
• Lymphatic and cutaneous circulation.
Wraps are offered by a variety of different spas to invigorate and detoxify the skin.
• The body is usually swathed for up to an hour in herb- and seaweed-soaked cloths to aid in circulation and firm the body's contours.
• You can expect to be wrapped from chest to toe (Arms are optional) while lying on a thermal blanket to keep you warm.
• A technician then unwraps you and as a final step, massages the body to further enhance circulation, sending oxygen to blocked tissues.
• Body wraps are based on "absorption" (where a product or substance "absorbs" these fluids) and "compaction" (where the skin is compacted to be more dense and tight).
Pre-Wrap Instructions
Pre-wrap instructions include no eating preferably three hours before your body wrap for tummy comfort. A juice fast on the day of your body wrap is ideal! Try to use a juicer so you ingest the maximum health benefit from your juice. Fruit juice is especially beneficial in promoting the flushing of toxins. Avoid shaving your legs or underarms on the day of the treatment. Shaving typically promotes irritability on the surface of the skin.
Post-Wrap Instructions
Because of the amount of inch loss that has occurred through tissue compacting and tightening, it will take a total of a week or two for your skin to totally adapt to this amount of loss. You can greatly assist this skin tightening process by retaining the nourishing ingredients by not using overly harsh soap (Super fatted or vegetable soap is preferred). Furthermore, drink plenty of fluids and water to promote the flushing of toxins out of the body.
Remember, exercise and nutrition are a vital part of maintaining a healthy body.
Go for a brisk walk; eat light healthy snacks throughout the day. Follow your bliss.
Another Seaweed Body Wrap
1 package (2 ounces) dried wakame (Japanese seaweed, available at natural food stores)
1. Reconstitute dried wakame by soaking it in warm water for several minutes.
2. Wrap the soft wet strands around your limbs or drape them across your body while soaking in a bath.
3. Soak 30 to 40 minutes and rinse.
Wakame is a mineral-rich sea vegetable with long fronds, so it easily wraps around the limbs and body. This and other edible seaweeds—kombu (or kelp), arame, hiziki, dulse—can be tossed into warm bath water to produce a smooth, healing gel that coats the skin with trace minerals. During a body wrap and soak, gently rub an emerald sea leaf over the face to revive and detoxify the skin
(Dried seaweed can also be ground into powder and placed in a small bag to scrub skin during bathing).
Actual Treatment Process (One hour and 15 minutes which includes time for consultation and clean up.)
Preparation
• Preheat your blanket for 10 minutes and adjust your temperature zones according to your client's body type and requirements. Example: you might decrease temperature to the lower zone if client is prone to varicosities or has poor circulation; decrease temperature to the middle zone if client is menstruating; the upper zone if client is not prone to claustrophobia. The best temperature setting for the average client is right in the middle - they will get maximum results, will feel relaxed, and not get overheated.
• Drape a regular sheet on your blanket, and then precut a piece of thermoplastic film at least six feet left in length.
• Organize your products being used, including your body mask, any additives chosen to enhance the mask's results during the mixing process, a *loofah, dry brush or body gommage to be used prior to the application of the seaweed (optional).
This can be an add-on to your basic treatment and is recommended in the beginning of the series
if the skin exhibits any dead cell build-up that could impede penetration. A quick dry brushing is a nice way to signature your body treatment and does aid in the stimulation and flow of lymph if you follow the lymph pathways and channels.
Application
• Once the client has been placed on the table, help them onto their side with their right leg over their left.
• Mix 150 to 200 grams of seaweed powder with hot water and add your toning plant extracts and aromatherapy blends (do not use pure essential oils!)
• With one hand, immediately spread the seaweed mixture over the legs, buttocks and back, and then help them onto their back, quickly spreading the remaining mixture on the front of the body from the ankles to their neck. Always finish with an application to the feet to prevent your client from getting chilled. It is also advisable to apply the seaweed, whether front or back, starting with the furthest side of the client away from you - to avoid getting covered in seaweed.
Wrapping
• Set down your bowl and using your clean hand, cover the client with the thermoplastic film, to avoid the client getting cold. Wash your hand that was used to apply the seaweed, and then proceed to wrap the client in the heating blanket. In doing so, make sure your client's shoulders are level with edge of the blanket, so when you fold the blanket, you don't cover their face, only the edge right at the neck. This edge should be covered with a soft towel. In addition, one should cover the shoulders and tuck the foot opening inside.
• Adjust your time between 15 and 20 minutes and then allow your client to close their eyes, relax, and most importantly, enjoy. The goal is to heighten the mental state of well-being as well as improve the physical state of well-being through relaxation. Therefore, rather than leave the room,
offer to cleanse your client's face and then provide a neck, shoulder and scalp massage. I
guarantee they'll truly appreciate the offer.

BRONZING
Heliotherapy (Self-Tanner)
1. Exfoliate your skin - Self tanners work by dyeing the top layer of skin, so it is important to slough your entire body to remove any dead skin build-up that will "catch" the product and result in
an uneven tan. The easiest way to do this is in the shower: Use either a shower gel with exfoliating beads, a loofah or stretch bath gloves made for this purpose. Exfoliate your entire body, paying close attention to "dry" areas like knees and elbows.
2. Make sure your skin is dry - If your skin is even slightly wet, the self-tanner will not go on evenly, and you will have brown streaks! After your shower, vigorously dry your skin. Do not apply the product in a steamy bathroom.
3. Apply moisturizer - A thin coat of moisturizer will make your skin as smooth as it can be and will prepare it for the most even application possible. Let the moisturizer absorb and dry for several minutes before applying self-tanner.
4. Apply the self-tanner as you would a moisturizer - Be sure to use slightly more self-tanner than you would moisturizer, and as you rub it in, make sure you spread it evenly over your skin
(Some people advise using circular motions to avoid streaks). The trickiest spots are the backs of your legs and your back (One woman recommends using a paint roller saturated with product on those areas). Remember that the tops of your feet and backs of your hands should not be as tan as the rest of your body. Apply the product lightly around your ankles, knees and elbows. Make sure the product is fully rubbed into the skin, you will streak wherever it isn't.
5. Moisturize around the edges - To avoid distinct tan lines, apply moisturizer to areas where you did not apply self-tanner, like your feet and backside, then gently rub it into the self-tanned areas.
6. Finally, be sure to dry completely before dressing or going to bed - It may take only 20 minutes to feel dry to the touch, but the longer you can wait before putting anything against your skin, the less likely you are to get splotches.
OR
1. Light exfoliation.
2. Sunless tanning product is applied to the entire body from head to toe. The tanning product will be rubbed into the skin with a light massage-like application and will be distributed on all areas evenly, and just think, no tan-lines, and no streaks!
(Note: only areas NEVER worked are the genitals. All other areas can and may be worked. If there are areas you do not want tanned or worked on please inform the therapist so they can avoid them, otherwise everything excluding the genitals will be treated.)

Pelotherapy or Fango (Mud or Clay)
Botanical rich mud hydrates, softens, and gently exfoliates dull skin. Therapeutic use of mud, peat moss, or clay applied to the body or part of the body. The Mud body wrap is designed to detoxification the skin and is good to balance hydration/oil of skin and help with acne. Your skin is daily challenged by exposure to the sun, pollutants and even stress. As a result, it loses the ability to renew itself. The mud wrap renews the skin natural ability to rebuild and rehydrate. This professional treatment conditions and moisturizes the skin, reduces appearance of redness, eliminates impurities and is perfect for stressed and problematic skin. The mud utilized in our wraps is very rich in minerals and naturally balanced organic compounds. Since the skin is the largest organ of absorption, by applying mineral-reach mud onto the body, the skin is allowed to absorb minerals and trace elements from the mud. The mud, in turn, draws out impurities trapped in the skin's surface. In addition, the Mud Wrap helps alleviate muscular tension, aches, and cramps by relaxing the muscles and activating circulation.

• Parafango - A body mask that combines wax and mud to heat, detoxify, and exfoliate the skin.
• Moor Mud - Mud taken from a 2,000 year-old Austrian moor that contains more than 700 herbs and plants. It is used for body wraps, facials and fangotherapy.
• Fango - (Fango is the Italian word for mud.) Fangotherapy involves using mud in facials and body wraps for detoxification, improved circulation, and pain relief.
• Fango Treatment (Therapy) (Fango Bath) - The Italian word for mud. Used in treatments, a highly mineralized mud may be mixed with oil or water and applied over the body as a heat pack to detoxify, stimulate the circulation, and relieve muscular and arthritic pain. Sometimes only an area such as a shoulder is covered. Otherwise the whole body is dipped or covered. "Parafango" is similar, using mud mixed with paraffin. This treatment relaxes the body, alleviates sore muscles, and softens the skin. Radioactivity is present in the mud at several spas. Pregnant women and women in their reproductive years should not risk possible genetic mutation by avoidable exposure to radioactivity. Fango creates all-encompassing, gooey warmth and works like a poultice, softening the skin. Natural ingredients, such as peat moss and sea kelp, often are mixed into the mud to help contain the warmth and increase mineral content.
